Forever Dansing

Kelly Holland-Fitzgerald

As an avid African hand-drum rhythm student for years, one day her teacher instructed her to not come back to drum lessons until she had danced on the other side of the drums.  So, in 1994, Kelly Fitzgerald began studying African-inspired dance, and discovered the mesmerizing dynamic of magic that is created when movement and music are integrated.  In that space, there is no separation between the dancer and the music; rather, they live within each other.  Kelly has continued her study and practice of African-inspired dance and other movement forms, including belly dance, Sufi techniques, tribal-trance, martial arts, tai chi, and yoga.

She began her study and practice of Nia in 1999 while she was pursuing her Masters degree in Environmental Science at Washington State University.  While her career as a wildlife biologist/conservation ecologist has focused on the care of the outer environment, Kelly’s foundation always moves from the care of the inner environment where mindbodyspirit are integrated.  In addition to her solid foundation in dance and movement, she has devoted considerable study to the healing arts, including Reiki, chakra healing and balancing, meditation, and massage.  She promotes the healing and empowerment of individuals both by utilizing her skills and knowledge in the healing arts and by encouraging emotional expression and personal growth through dance, writing, and music.  Nia is a natural extension of the integrative path of mindbodyspirit that Kelly has been walking for over a decade.   In 2004, she became certified as a Nia Technique instructor, which has enabled her to manifest her dedication to creating positive change individually and collectively by enlivening the body, mind, emotions, and spirit.  Her study of the techniques and principles of Nia is on-going: she earned her blue belt in 2005, her Brown Belt in 2007, and her Black Belt in 2009.  Kelly utilizes Nia to encourage individuality and personalization within a group setting, motivating her students to use their voice and to empower themselves to make choices that are centered in their body’s kinesthetic wisdom and rooted in Nia’s foundational principle: the Joy of Movement.

Kelly creates a non-judgmental atmosphere in which to encourage, inspire, and support each individual’s pursuit of integrative mind±body±spirit awakening, healing, and empowerment. She says, “It is my intention to share Nia’s gifts, to be a catalyst of positive change for others, and, by treating each person as a whole being, to heal the mind±body±spirit through movement.”
